A few minutes later, when I entered the duplex I was sharing with Ben, I found him getting ready to inspect the place for listening devices and hidden surveillance cameras.

He was using a couple of tools Support Services always included in our Kits, and when I walked in, he handed me the signal detector to scan for listening devices, while he continued using the camera detector. Once we were both satisfied the place was clean, he said, “I’ll go next door and do a sweep of Helina’s place.”

“Do you want me to help you?’

“No, Helina will do it, but you could set up the APS while I’m gone.”

An APS was an Acoustical Protection System or sound distortion device—sometimes called a white noise generator—which would thwart any listening equipment aimed at the duplex from the outside.

Since most APS devices needed to be in a location where conversations were taking place, they were usually disguised as innocuous objects.

The APS device I removed from my suitcase was a black alarm clock, which I set up in the living room on a table underneath a mounted television screen.

“I think we’re good to go here,” I said, when Ben walked in a few minutes later. “How were things at Helina’s place?”

“Her place was clean too.”

Ben sat down on the upholstered sofa and motioned at his cell phone. “While I was next door, I got a text from Sam. He was responding to the text I sent him about our arrival. He said the Ops Center wants us to go online with them in fifteen minutes, or as soon as we know the walls here don’t have ears.”

“Sounds like they’ve got something they want to share with us. Did you tell Helina?”

“Uh-huh. She said she’d be right over. I’ll get my laptop and get things set up.”

When Ben went back to his bedroom, I heard a knock on the door, and as soon as I made sure it was Helina, I let her in.

Before closing the door, I did a quick recon of the medical center, where it looked like all the supplies had been unloaded, and the vans were pulling away from the parking lot.

As the vans drove by the duplex, I suddenly realized the Red Ballcap guy and the Blue Scrubs guy weren’t at the wheel of either one of the vans.

I admit that surprised me.

However, just before closing the door, I spotted the Red Ballcap guy. He was sitting inside a black, older model Toyota Corolla, parked just down the street from our duplex.

I didn’t see the Blue Scrubs guy, so I wasn’t concerned about him.

I was concerned about the Red Ballcap guy.
